Candle blamed for Palermo house fire
UPPER TOWNSHIP - Officials believe a candle caused a house fire in Upper Township late Tuesday night.
A home at 20 Linnette Drive, off Route 9 in Palermo, was rendered uninhabitable after smoke filled the entire home. No one was injured and the family of four living there stayed with other family in the area following the blaze.
The fire was reported around 11:30 p.m. April 17. About 25 firefighters responded to the scene and were able to contain flames to the kitchen, but smoke filled the house. The fire was extinguished in about 15 minutes, officials said. The Upper Township Rescue Squad and State Police from the Woodbine barracks also responded.
The Cape May County fire marshal is investigating the incident, but township fire officials pointed to the candle as the likely cause.
